93 year Old Veteran freezes to death in Michigan when power is turned off

Bay City Electric Light & Power, in Bay City, Michigan put a limiter on the electric usage of a 93 year old man after the man failed to pay his bills for 4 months. They neglected to explain to him how the device worked, and that if he used over a certain amount of power, and the limiter flipped the power off, he had to go outside and manually turn it back on again.  The device turned off his power which also turned off his heat (althought the heat was gas, the thermostat was electric.)

The World War II Veteran medic, winner of a Purple Heart, was found frozen to death in his home. This man had enough money to pay his bills. His nephew who lives in Florida, believes that the man was sufferring fron dementia as enough cash to pay his bills was found in the home.

Michigan state regulations do not allow the power to be turned off by the state regulated power companies. Unfortunately for Marvin E. Schur, the municiple Bay City Electric Light and Power was not under state regulations. The Michigan legislature is now working on a bill to make the ban on shutting off power binding on the municiple power companies as well as the state’s.

No one should turn off the power on elderly, or on veterans, or on anyone in the winter cold in Michigan.  No word yet on a lawsuit, as the man’s wife had died two years before and they had no children.

  1. I just want to say that I hope the powers that be is satisfied after putting the limiter device on a 93 year old man’s meter box so he could freeze to death. This is just an example of how in these terrible trying times what companies and people feel about our fellow man. He could have had dementia. He may have been confused about bills. Whatever the case, he didn’t deserve to die like he did. Did someone try to call him? Did someone go to his door and knock and talk to him? This just absolutely makes me physically ill. I will never forget this insane incident. This could have been my father or grandfather. The electric company that I am a member of is just as uncaring and unfeeling as all the big businesses in this country are today. No matter what kind of medical conditions, hard times, out of work issues that may affect our lives, there is no compassion. I will pray for this man, his family and for those of you who values the mighty dollar so much more than a human being’s life.

  2. Here in Alaska, we are angry and appalled at the senseless death of Mr. Schur. Bay City should be ashamed. The municipal electric company should be sued by someone on behalf of Mr. Schur and a fund set up to help the elderly and disabled who are not able to take care of their affairs as they age. Even though it won’t bring Mr. Schur back, an apology should be forthcoming for the thoughtless, inhumane actions of the Bay City Municipal Electric Co.

  3. This is just plain sick. I hope the law suit that comes out of this hits this company so hard they would have wished they gave this guy free electricty for his lifetime. All the money should go to the hospital where he left his estate to. A sad day and another example of the heartless people running some of these companies.
